In 2005, I was accepted into a pyramid scheme called W+K12: an experimental ad agency/school where twelve humans pay to work on real clients, learn to collaborate and do more with less. At the end of the year, we published a limited edition book containing all of the work we did for our clients: National Voice, Grokker, Bauhaus, Ecotrust, and Film Movement. Click below to see what we learned

In response to the contentious debate over the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008, and anticipating the need of journalists to publish stimulus-related stories, I built HowISpentMyStimulus.com, a collaborative website allowing American taxpayers to share stories about their purchases with government money. It became an anecdotal way of understanding how people were spending money meant to boost a failing economy. The site went viral, with over 200,000 unique visits and mentions in major media outlets including the New York Times, New York Magazine, CBS Evening News, and The Economist.

NEWSPAPER 2.0

Newspaper 2.0 is a graffiti art project, created with the Wooster Collective, that seeks to inject new media into an old medium by enlisting high profile artists and GOOD readers to alter the front page of their local newspaper. The project culminated with a curated online gallery, and a public art opening in NYC where patrons were asked to draw on and alter newspaper wheat-pasted onto giant walls.

Border Film Project is a collaborative art project giving disposable cameras to two groups on different sides of the U.S.-Mexico border: undocumented migrants crossing the desert into the United States, and American Minutemen trying to stop them. To date, we have received 73 cameras — 38 from migrants and 35 from Minutemen — with nearly 2,000 pictures in total. The pictures show the human face of immigration, and they challenge us to question our stereotypes and to see through new and personal lenses.

PROJECT DETAILS

To recruit migrant photographers, we visited migrant shelters and other humanitarian organizations on the Mexican side of the border. In the busiest areas, these shelters housed dozens of migrants every night, providing them dinner, a place to sleep, and sometimes clothes and medicine for the journey. We met the migrants in groups and told them about the project. Since many had never used cameras before, we also became impromptu photography teachers—pointing out the flash and film wheel and teaching them how to aim through the viewfinder. In addition, we showed them what U.S. mailboxes looked like so they would know how to return the cameras to us. Most migrants seemed eager to participate. Many expressed a profound desire to show American citizens what they had to endure to arrive in the United States.

We distributed cameras to Minutemen volunteers at observation sites in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and California. During observations, volunteers camp out from sunset to sunrise, silently staring into the pitch-black darkness of the desert. When they spot migrants and smugglers, they avoid direct confrontation and instead call the Border Patrol. Our time with the Minutemen gave us a view of the so-called “vigilantes” that was much more nuanced than the caricatures painted by the media. We realized that volunteers are by and large concerned Americans, trying to do their part to make the United States a safer place and to protect American jobs. Many are retired veterans or have backgrounds in law enforcement. They have continued their lives of public service by volunteering to do what they believe the U.S. government should be doing—regaining control of the U.S. border with Mexico.

Migrants and Minutemen have very different backgrounds, yet they share one profound belief: both sides would agree that they are documenting a situation that should not be happening. U.S. border policy is broken and needs to be fixed.

		<description>ABOUT

Rudy Adler is cofounder of 1000memories.com, a VC and Y Combinator-funded startup in San Francisco.

Rudy took his first entrepreneurial steps in college, where he made a living by selling concert tickets online, and started TradeTexts.com, a used textbook exchange for students. He later co-founded Border Film Project, a book (published by Harry N. Abrams) and collaborative art project that gave disposable cameras to migrants and Minutemen on opposite sides of the U.S.-Mexico border.

As projects director for GOOD magazine, he started Newspaper 2.0, an online art project with the Wooster Collective in NYC. And in 2008, he created Howispentmystimulus.com, a website allowing American taxpayers to share stories about spending their economic stimulus checks.

Working at Wieden+Kennedy, Rudy helped launch the Levi's Go Forth campaign and an award-winning campaign for the film, Coraline. He's also created work for global brands including Apple, Starbucks, and ESPN, during his five years in the advertising industry.

Rudy's businesses and projects have been covered by a number of media outlets including the NY Times, NPR, and CNN, who recorded Rudy nervously bobbing his head.</description>

INFLUENCER CAMPAIGN (Slideshow)
We wanted to drive the conversation early with a digital campaign, that wasn't actually digital, but had huge network effects. We targeted an ecosystem of online communities and gave their influencers something to talk about. Fifty one-of-a-kind, handmade boxes were sent to key bloggers, filled with relics from the set of the movie. The boxes also contained passwords that unlocked exclusive content on Coraline.com.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/19178/214257/47_outsidebox.jpg" width="640" height="480" width_o="640" height_o="480" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/19178/214257/47_outsidebox_o.jpg" data-mid="1296226"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/19178/214257/47_hands.jpg" width="640" height="480" width_o="640" height_o="480" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/19178/214257/47_hands_o.jpg" data-mid="1296225"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/19178/214257/47_coralinedoll.jpg" width="640" height="480" width_o="640" height_o="480" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/19178/214257/47_coralinedoll_o.jpg" data-mid="1296224"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/19178/214257/47_spats.jpg" width="640" height="480" width_o="640" height_o="480" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/19178/214257/47_spats_o.jpg" data-mid="1296227"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/19178/214257/47_tools.jpg" width="640" height="480" width_o="640" height_o="480" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/19178/214257/47_tools_o.jpg" data-mid="1296228"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

CORALINE.COM (Slideshow)
Explore a virtual world made entirely by hand. Every piece of this site was handcrafted, photographed, and pieced together to re-create Coraline's world. Each room featured a different experience that allowed users to participate directly in the movie's story. The most popular was Button Your Eyes, an application that activated your webcam, sewed buttons over your eyes, and then exporting a photo through social networks like Facebook. Visit Site

BOBINSKY BANNER ADS
These rich banners ads, featuring Mr. Bobinsky, took over major websites like Yahoo and FanDango during the week preceding the film's opening. Shortlisted at the 2009 Webby Awards.

SHOFT FILMS
We made 12 short films, each highlighting a different component of making a handmade film.
